Welcome to Indigenous SPCA's My Community, My Perspective Photo Project page. The photos posted here have been taken by students in rural and remote Indigenous communities. The photos can be downloaded, for a license fee that goes to the young photographer, and used on websites, in publications, etc.
This photo sharing project for youth is part of our in-community animal management & community safety work. When we visit a community to discuss animal management planning, or to facilitate a spay & neuter clinic, we work with the local education department to organize this fun project that can broaden perspectives and develop empathy.
The project starts with the students being introduced to some basic photography and composition lessons. We go on to discuss the benefits of taking the time to see things, like the student's home and community, from a different perspective, like from the perspective of a dog or a cat for instance.
The students are then given a black and white, professional grade disposable (recyclable) camera and instructions on how to use the legacy equipment which always results in lots of laughs. The cameras only allow for 27 photos to be taken and the flash is manually operated. It's not what the students are used to and they often point out how powerful their cell phone cameras and apps are.
Regardless, those who do take photos and return the cameras are eligible to win prizes (up to $400!) and some of the photos are posted to this page giving the photographers an opportunity to garner licensing fees for their creative works.
The high resolution (6 to 7mb) downloaded photos (accessible after the license fee has been paid) do not have 'COPYRIGHT' across them.
